American Airlines announces a true Premium Economy

American Airlines announced that AA widebody aircraft a true Premium Economy seat and area will be introduced with the Boeing 787-9 (2-3-2 configuration) in late 2016, followed by the A350 coming in 2017. This will bring AA up to par with offerings from oneworld partners British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines (on Boeing 787 aircraft) and Qantas for international widebody service.

These aircraft will offer Business, Premium Economy, Main Cabin Extra and Main Cabin (three class) service; 3 rows of PEY seats will be installed on the 787-9s. They will be followed by retrofitting the Boeing 777-300ERs, 777-200ERs, 787-8s and Airbus A330s - expected to occur over three years. The Boeing 767-323ERs will not be retrofitted due to their pending retirement.

The new seat section will be immediately behind Business class. The seats will be typical Premium Economy seats with greater width and recline than Main Cabin, with about 38 inches of seat pitch. The leather covered seats will loosely resemble enhanced current domestic First seats in dimension, with positionable headrests and a foot rest for the first row of seats and presumably a positionable foot bar extending from the seat in front for the others. Additionally, differentiated service will include priority boarding, increased checked baggage allowance, amenity kits, personal AVOD IFE and noise reducing headsets, at-seat A/C and USB power, enhanced meals service.

That looks like a truly luxurious setup for sure. Looking forward to checking them out next time I ride with AA.
